The Commercial Underwriter plays a key role in both new deal execution and ongoing portfolio management, partnering closely with lending teams to evaluate credit opportunities and support informed decision-making. This individual will analyze financials, assess risk, structure loans, and produce clear, well-supported credit memos, while also contributing to pipeline discussions and portfolio monitoring. The role offers strong exposure across the full lending lifecycle within a fast-paced, collaborative environment, where underwriting has a direct impact on deal outcomes and business growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze financial statements to assess credit risk, including cash flow, liquidity, profitability, and leverage
- Perform financial statement spreading and calculate key credit metrics
- Prepare clear, well-structured credit approval memos outlining risks, strengths, and recommendations
- Evaluate collateral, industry trends, and borrower performance
- Support portfolio management, including covenant testing, reporting, and ongoing monitoring
- Participate in pipeline and deal discussions, providing input on structure and risk
- Approve loans within assigned authority and recommend credits outside of authority limits
- Maintain a strong understanding of internal credit policies and procedures
- Contribute to process improvements and support special projects as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field
- 5+ years of commercial underwriting
- Strong understanding of financial accounting and credit principles
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
