Role Overview

The Underwriter is responsible for reviewing and underwriting non-QM loan files to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company guidelines, investor requirements, and regulatory standards. This role requires strong analytical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to make sound credit decisions in a fast-paced environment.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and underwrite non-QM loan files in accordance with company guidelines, investor requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Analyze borrower credit, income, assets, collateral, and supporting documentation to assess overall loan risk and eligibility.
  • Perform detailed review of appraisal reports and collateral documentation to ensure property compliance with underwriting standards.
  • Identify documentation discrepancies, risk factors, or guideline exceptions and escalate issues as appropriate.
  • Issue underwriting decisions clearly and accurately in approved company formats.
  • Ensure underwriting turn times are met or exceeded while maintaining high quality and accuracy standards.
  • Partner closely with Account Managers, Processing, and Funding teams to clear conditions and support timely loan closings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent mortgage industry experience considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of recent non-QM mortgage underwriting experience required.
  • Strong working knowledge of non-QM loan products, underwriting guidelines, and mortgage regulations.
  • Proficiency with Encompass loan origination system preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word.
  • Highly analytical with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to independently assess risk and make sound credit decisions.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
