The Senior Underwriter plays a critical role in evaluating and approving Business Purpose Lending transactions, including RTL, GUC, and DSCR loans. This position is responsible for delivering sound, timely credit decisions while maintaining strong risk discipline and adherence to internal credit policies, investor guidelines, and regulatory standards. The role partners closely with Sales, Credit, and Operations and offers the opportunity to influence portfolio quality while supporting production growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently underwrite and approve RTL, GUC, and DSCR loan requests in accordance with internal credit policy and investor guidelines
- Analyze borrower financials, property cash flow, valuations, construction budgets, and overall project feasibility
- Assess credit risk, identify mitigating factors, and structure loans to balance risk and return
- Collaborate with Sales, Operations, and Credit leadership to resolve complex or higher-risk transactions
- Ensure loan files are complete, accurate, and compliant prior to approval and closing
- Provide guidance, feedback, and support to junior underwriting team members as needed
- Stay current on market trends, product updates, and regulatory developments impacting Business Purpose Lending
- Contribute to ongoing enhancement of underwriting standards, processes, and best practices
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Real Estate, or a related field
- 5+ years of underwriting experience within Business Purpose Lending, private lending, or commercial real estate finance
- Strong working knowledge of RTL, GUC, and DSCR loan products
- Demonstrated ability to independently underwrite complex loan transactions
- Solid understanding of credit risk analysis, collateral valuation, and cash flow underwriting
- Experience with underwriting systems, loan origination platforms, and valuation tools
- Strong analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail
- Effective communicator with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally
