The Director of Underwriting will lead and scale the underwriting function across residential and commercial loan products. Initially hands-on, this leader will underwrite transactions directly while establishing processes and standards. As the platform grows, the role will evolve into managing and developing a high-performing underwriting team, ensuring disciplined, consistent credit execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the hands-on underwriting lead initially, directly underwriting transactions while building scalable processes, standards, and controls; evolve the function by hiring, developing, and leading a high-performing underwriting team.
- Lead underwriting for high-volume residential loan products (typically $2–7MM) and select commercial transactions, overseeing financial modeling, valuations, third-party reports, due diligence, and final approvals.
- Establish and enforce underwriting best practices, workflow efficiencies, and consistent adherence to internal credit policies and investor standards.
- Partner closely with the sales team to structure viable transactions, clearly communicating credit decisions, risks, and alternatives.
- Prepare and present pipeline reporting, credit summaries, and Loan Committee materials, articulating underwriting conclusions to executive leadership.
- Oversee underwriting workflows, turnaround times, and staffing models aligned with projected deal volume growth.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with legal, title, escrow, and operations teams to ensure efficient closings, accurate documentation, and strong post-closing execution.
- Support asset management activities, including construction budget and draw oversight, covenant compliance, delinquency monitoring, and loan modifications, extensions, and payoffs.
- Act as a fiduciary steward of investor capital, maintaining objective, disciplined credit judgment across all underwriting decisions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- 10+ years of real estate underwriting experience across SFR and commercial assets.
- Prior leadership experience or readiness to step into a Director-level role.
- Strong expertise in real estate finance, valuation, and structured debt.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with underwriting and CRM systems.
